| Down man's hit song inspired by Reek climb Country Roads Michael Commins CLIMBING Croagh Patrick last June provided the inspiration to Down man Gerry Flanagan to pen his first song. 'The Lady of the Reek' is proving a popular number on Mid-West Radio and Castlebar Community Radio and the man from the Mourne county is hoping to perform at a number of shows in the area over the coming weeks. Gerry hails from Dundrum, a seaside village at the foot of the Mourne Mountains. It is also the home parish of Patrick Kielty, the comedian. An avid Gaelic football fan, he is the holder of three county championship medals with his home club. His wife Bernadette is from County Longford and they met in Birmingham. "I used to sing in the Irish bars over there where I met many lifelong friends from Mayo. The song 'Lady Of The Reek' was the first song I wrote and recorded the words and music to. It was inspired by climbing Croagh Patrick on Reek Sunday back on July 27 this year. "After returning from Medjugorje, I recorded another song called 'A Little Piece Of Heaven'. It's about my time in Medjugorje. I am currently working on an album which hopefully will be out at Christmas. "Father Eddie Rogan is from Ballina and he was parish priest in Ballycroy and several parishes in County Mayo. He is now working in a very poor region in Brazil and I decided to nominate this charity as I became very good friends with him, playing the guitar and singing every evening in Medjugorje in July this year. I am contributing 50 per cent of the proceeds from the CD to his charity and I hope to travel to see him and present a cheque to him personally," says Gerry. Callow-based Michael Fox says Gerry is very appreciative of the support he is receiving from the Mayo public. "He is delighted that the song is being so well-received and for all the airplay it is getting in Mayo. He hopes to have the CD available in record shops in Mayo in the coming days. The song is very much from the heart and all who have climbed the Reek will be able to identify with its sentiments." |
